The idea of studying to many of us as we age is related to college or the university.Learning as we get on with our life just isn't something all of us carry out naturally. With picture taking you need to learn or get left behind. If you are planning to improve the caliber of your photos you have to constantly learn and continue learning all about digital photography. In conjunction with the will to learn will be obsession. You'll need plenty of it to be a digital photographer as with something in life. There's always a chance to create the perfect image but getting you to where your feet are located on the perfect vantage position is the big difference.Passion brings you to that place at 5am and enables you to shoot the wonderful setting sun or sit down through the high temperatures of the day to be able to shoot the particular evasive endangered creature. It's this desire or enthusiasm that will inspire you to learn those techniques that you'd otherwise not be bothered with.So here are a handful of secrets to learning or enhancing on your own digital photography. You need to nourish your enthusiasm. How can you make anything grow? Through serving it, an easy to use but really neglected concept in digital photography.Let me simplify it a lot more.If you adore parrots then spend time where wild birds tend to be, acquire birding mags, sign up for the bird watching membership that has a strong emphasis on digital photography.Whenever you rub shoulders with enthusiastic men and women and spending some time centering on your own obsession, it will grow.I really like galleries, particularly fauna and mother nature and following an hour or so browsing through the pictures, I would like to get my camera and photograph. So how will feeding your enthusiasm allow you to learn? It gets you out taking more photographs and therefore practising far more and getting together with those who are inspiring and more experienced. And so the main point here is your mastering curve shoots right up.Begin to assess, compare and also improve on the pictures you are taking. You'll never learn until you review your images and assess them versus a set of requirements. The main instructing technique in my most recent book is assessing your pictures. As a result you can observe just where the quality problems and complex problems lie as well as fix them. You need to have a coach, a book or program to understand what these kinds of requirements will be.Download this FREE Digital Photography E-book which illustrates just how you can take photos like the professionals do.

Norfolk and Classical Literature

Children's Writers.Captain Marryat, who wrote the children's classic "The Children of the New Forest", was born in London but lived at and is buried at Langham, Norfolk.Anna Sewell is one of the few well-known writers who was born in Norfolk. She was born in Yarmouth but wrote "Black Beauty" whilst living in Old Catton; the horse that inspired her famous book was said to have been stabled in Sewell Barn, Norwich.Sir Henry Rider Haggard, who was born in Bradenham, wrote "King Solomon's Mines", which inspired a "lost world" genre of fiction.Arthur Ransome was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, but set "Coot Club" and "The Big Six" on Norfolk's Broads."Biggles" creator, W.E.Johns, was a sanitary inspector in Swaffham.Novelists.In "Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe, Crusoe anchored in Yarmouth Roads and was then shipwrecked in the sea outside Winterton.Defoe is thought to have named his hero after seeing the grave of a Robinson Cruso in King's Lynn.P.G.Wodehouse wrote "Money For Nothing" whilst relaxing at Hunstanton Hall.Hunstanton Hall was the inspiration for Rudge Hall in "Very Good, Jeeves".In "Emma", Jane Austen writes that "Percy was a week at Cromer once".Charles Dickens visited Yarmouth in 1949 and used it as a setting for "David Copperfield".Poets.William Wordsworth is associated with his beloved Lake District but his sister, Dorothy, moved to live with her uncle at Forncett St Peter rectory in 1788.Wordsworth visited her in Norfolk and his uncle was going to find him a local parish; his uncle then discovered that Wordsworth had fathered an illegitimate child in France and Wordsworth's chances of religious life in Norfolk ended although his career as a romantic poet took off.Lord Byron's famous poem, "Don Juan", was influenced by the experiments with Italian ottava rima narrative form by John Hookham Frere, whose family home was Roydon, Norfolk.A very early writer, Geoffrey Chaucer, mentions the "Holy Cross of Bromholm" in "The Canterbury Tales".Two poet laureates have Norfolk connections.John Skelton, who is thought to have been born in Diss in the 15th century, styled himself as a poet laureate; in the 20th century, John Betjeman visited Diss in 1963, became fond of the town, and later wrote "Dear Mary, Yes, it will be bliss, To go with you by train to Diss" to Mary Wilson, wife of the former prime minister.

TV Review: Nikita (The CW)

TV Review: Nikita (The CW)

It took a guest starring role for Thad Luckinbill, who I first saw on Young & the Restless late in 1999, to get me to watch this show.Over the years, his character came in and out of heavy story lines. His character was always one of my favorites and he handled interviews with humor and class. When an actor or actress gets our attention, we like to stay up on all their latest work and so here we are.Nikita, at first glance with all the promos, was just not a show we wanted to add to our reviews, as we felt this concept had been done before. Now it has been picked up for a second season, and with Luckinbill's persuasiveness, we are going back to the beginning. After watching the first episode we are hooked. The writing is less 007 and more Buffy Summers meets Jaime Sommers while together they right the world's wrongs.Nikita (Maggie Q 'Margaret Denise Quigley') does not seem to have a last name, which could be cause for later episode reveals. She was a drug addicted teenager who was sentenced to death but saved by Division, an agency which will train her to follow their protocol of bringing down anyone attempting to destroy the United States of America. The organization is soon dismantled by the government, but those in power at Division choose to follow their own protocol and go after whoever they want, possibly for a large fee. They recruit Nikita and in the opening sequence narrated by her she explains the past, her role at Division and what she has set out to do now that she has escaped.6 years earlier, she was taken from prison, forced to become an assassin for Division, a secret unit of the government that she explains has now gone rogue. She believes that Division killed the man she loved.Eventually she would get free and is now hunted by her mentor, Michael (Shane West).Nikita has trained her own protege, Alexandra Udinov (Lyndsy Fonseca), who will be her eyes and ears on the inside of Division, and together they will take Division apart one one mission at a time.Alex will be forced to face training by Division and must withstand all the tests and challenge they put before her. When she completes these, and with the discretion of Division, she will go outside the compound and become the assassin they have planned. Both characters, Nikita and Alexandra, have dark pasts and without Division they would not have been able to escape, but this freedom comes with a cost.It starts with their lives, then their humanity, followed by the training of survival of kill or be killed.Michael is a former US Navy intelligence officer who is now second in command at Division. He is a good guy trapped in his own revenge scheme to get retribution for the death of his wife and daughter, who were killed by Kaseem Tariq who was hired by the head of Division to kill Michael.Percy (Xander Berkeley) is the ruthless head of Division, and when Nikita escapes it becomes his one focus to bring her back to the organization's compound. This pursuit sometimes brings out his inability to stay focused on the mission and he often makes crucial mistakes in the process. He build the empire known as Division and has taken the organization from a government controlled program into the private sector, scoring billions in revenue.Amanda (Melinda Clarke) is a psychologist and master manipulator who uses twists and turns to control the agents. She builds cold relationships while working with the recruits. She does, however, show signs of heart felt caring when in the presence of certain training operatives.Seymour Birkhoff (Aaron Stanford) is a computer genius and came into Division at the same time as Nikita. In college he attempted to access The Pentagon which put him in a direct path of Division.Roan (Rob Stewart) is a cleaner which goes hand in hand with assignments of assassination. He is Percy's right-hand man who follows orders exactly and never questions a moment of time spent within Division.Owen Elliot (Devon Sawa) is also a cleaner for Division but after they kill Emily the woman he fell in love with he joins forces with Nikita to bring down Division.Elliot is the operative who killed Nikita's fiance, Daniel Munroe, which may come out in later episodes.Ryan Fletcher (Noah Bean) will assist Nikita in her pursuit to take down Division.Nathan Colville (Thad Luckinbill) is the love interest of Alex but is soon forced to flee because he shoots Jaden to protect her.Thom (Ashton Holmes) has been training with Division for a year before Alex arrives. He is determined to prove his wealth within Division while trying to protect Alex.Ari Tasarov (Peter Outerbridge) runs a Russian crime syndicate called GOGUL.He is a cold-hearted and calculating man who wants Nikita to join forces in taking down Division so his criminal organization can take control of the world. As with our music, movies and books reviews, we look for small tokens by those in charge of the final product.Television loses a star instantly by not rolling the episode title at the beginning of each episode. So it seems Nikita would have scored a 5 star rating had they been thoughtful enough to share the titles during opening credits. This is an extremely well written revenge-meets-espionage network television show.Since the merge of The WB and UPN, CW has dropped a lot of really good shows and it has taken awhile for them to build reputable lineups."Supernatural" might have been the strongest show CW kept in rotation. Now with "Nikita" along with "The Secret Circle", "Ringer", and "Vampire Diaries", the network has begun to build a younger generation following. The older crowd who loves good adventure, supernatural and action thrillers will easily get hooked as well.Let's encourage the networks and cable to work harder to bring greatly written shows back and drop this pursuit of ridiculous reality television. Those days are in the past, so let's begin to demand better programming, because let's face it, some reality television is like waiting for hockey to break out during a game that is all fighting. It is now all about the conflict not about the creative genius of writers that still await discovery.Congratulations, CW you can become the strong network if you do not lose sight of what needs to be put in the past. reality television.

Why Do I Recommend Thomas the Train For Children?

Why Do I Recommend Thomas the Train For Children?

Having been an educator since 1992 and now a parent of a pair of 2.5 years old twins, I strongly feel that Thomas the Train stories are very educational for kids. Why? The main reason is the language used in the stories. If you pay attention to the words used in the Thomas Train series, you will be pleasantly amazed by the appropriate use of good words. Some examples are 'splendid engine', 'panoramic view', 'avalanche', 'coals from the mines', 'rocks from the quarries', etc.No doubt these words are very simple for us but it is really not often that children's cartoons are presented in perfect English and even less frequently do we come across one that offers creative words! Just imagine what the kids are able to pick up from a tender age and they can even make use of them when they are writing stories in schools! What great teachers Thomas the Train and his friends are!!If you have read any of Maria Montessori's works on children education, you would have heard about the importance of exposing the kids to good language from a young age because the language heard is absorbed into their subconscious mind. Thus, even if you do not hear them actually using the words yet, it does not mean that they are not learning. What they hear around them is unconsciously absorbed into their mind and when they are ready, they will be able to use the language. Therefore, if you expose them to good English from a tender age, you will find that your children will pick up the use of such good language over time.In fact, the Thomas Train series have been around for over 6 decades and they are very experienced teachers. Not only can your kids learn through the story books, you may also choose to let your children watch the videos or TV series available. One suggestion is that an adult should be around to guide the children when they are watching the shows because you can then explain the words and re-enforce its use.Not only can the children learn good English usage, they can also learn Math as the trains have their own unique numbers.Even though my twins are only two years old, they are already able to tell me the unique number representation of some of the trains such as Thomas being number 1, Edward is number 2, Henry is number 3, Gordon is 4, James is 5, Percy is 6 and Toby is 7, etc.Yes, both of them can tell me the names of the trains as well as the number representing them! They even know the names of the two coaches led by Thomas!Besides being a good source of teaching materials where the English language and Math is concerned, you can also make use of the character 'Thomas' to teach your kids on good character building.Through the 'Thomas and Friends' series, you can see that Thomas has a very strong character and does not give up easily. The various engines also work together and demonstrate to children the importance of co-operation and team work.In the stories, the engines live in the Island of Sodor and there are lots of adventures that the engines come across each day.As the children watch the series, they learn the fun of exploring the island together with the trains, coaches and trucks. The above are just some of the ways in which Thomas the Train can help in the development of your child. If you decide to get the Thomas train sets in addition to the story books and videos, you can also assist your children's cognitive development as they learn how to manipulate the train sets on the tracks.Besides the Thomas Train story books and Thomas the Train videos, there are also other related items which will attract your kids as well such as Thomas the Train games, Thomas Train beddings, etc.It is indeed unbelievable how many ways you can really make use of this seemingly common and simple character in the development of your child's education!

    5.0 out of 5 stars Essential, February 23, 1999
    By A Customer
This review is from: Steve Reich 1965-1995 (Audio CD)
The term "essential" gets thrown about too much. And heck, the claim that certain words get thrown about too much gets thrown about too much. But here is a collection that really *is* essential to understanding the nature of a whole shift not just in classical music, but in popular music and indeed in popular culture. So many of Reich's ideas and concepts have become so deeply embedded in current classical music, film scoring (any number of examples, but think about Tangerine Dream's score for "Risky Business" and Hans Zimmer's score for "Thin Red Line," for starters), electronic music and even the visual arts.

This box set gives the listener all of Reich's major works. I can't even attempt to describe them individually, but every one of these 10 CDs is compelling. For the totally uninitiated, take out "Music for 18 Musicians" (presented here in a crystalline new recording) to get an idea of what the core of this guy is all... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic, but not the definitive..., May 19, 2004
    By
This review is from: Steve Reich 1965-1995 (Audio CD)
While a multi CD collection spanning 30 years does sound very promsing, Nonesuch cannot offer all of the best recordings of some of Reich's masterpieces (Music for 18 Musicians or Drumming), and some have been missed out completely (Music for a Large Ensemble), presumably because the piece was not recorded under the Nonesuch label. While the collection is formidable, a listener wanting to hear the best recordings of all the pieces might do better seeking out the older (or longer!) recordings of the pieces.
